Juneteenth 2024

A Reflection on Freedom, Advocacy, Community

This year’s Juneteenth celebration was a vibrant and meaningful event, centered on the historical significance of Juneteenth, the history of immigration in Lewiston, and discussions on policies that foster a more just, fair, and equitable society.

The event featured an inspiring lineup of panelists, all community leaders and activists dedicated to serving the public. Among them were Fatuma Hussein of the Immigrant Resource Center of Maine, Jerry Edwards from Genius Black, Laura Ligouri from Mindbridge, and Joshua Brister from the Black Chamber of Commerce. The highlight of the day was our Keynote Speaker, Melissa Hue from the City of Portland, who delivered an empowering address.

As part of the festivities, we honored community allies and champions with awards, recognizing their contributions to advancing equity and justice. Attendees enjoyed delicious Southern cuisine, live music, and captured the memories of the day with the help of talented photographers.

As we look ahead to our 2025 Juneteenth celebration, we extend heartfelt gratitude to our speakers, organizers, and everyone who made this event possible. Most importantly, thank you to the community members who joined us in celebrating this important day of reflection and unity. Together, we continue the work of building a brighter future.
