COA Organizes Community Response to ICE

In January 2026, following harmful and racist remarks from the presidential administration, Lewiston organizations were subjected to profiling and Maine saw a surge in ICE activity.

COA moved quickly: drawing from rapid-response models used in Portland, as well as lessons shared by experienced organizers in Minneapolis, we built a coordinated community response system rooted in communication, care, and action. Within days, COA launched a text chain that grew to more than 1,000 members. We organized volunteers, connected families with trusted legal and safety resources, and released timely informational bulletins to keep our community informed.

The immediate surge has ended, but the uncertainty has not. We continue training leaders, strengthening networks, and ensuring our communities have the education and tools they need to stay safe and organized.
